I believe in being patient and understanding. Lessons should have a comfortable atmosphere and be fun for young children.
Parents are welcome to attend lessons and I recommend parents encourage their children to practise at home at least 20 minutes each day.
For a strong foundation I start beginners with John Thompson’s Easiest Piano Course. This will develop technique, note reading in both hands and a basic understanding of keyboard harmony. I use teaching methods for beginners that are fun and easy to understand.
I can supplement these pieces with popular or favourite pieces of pupils in arrangements of a suitable level.
I encourage all styles – classical, jazz or pop – and coach pupils taking exams at Associated Board or Trinity Board. Pupils interested in preparing for Grade 1 must have completed book 3 of John Thompson or an equivalent.
For adult beginners I recommend Alfred’s All in one Course which contains well known tunes and good note reading practises.
If you have your heart set on playing a particular piece of music I can help you play it!
I’m happy to find special requests. I have a large collection of music available. I also offer music transcription of songs.
If you would like help with the purchase of a keyboard or piano for you child, I am happy to make recommendations and give contact details of shops where instruments can be bought. It is essential that your child has an instrument to practice at home to facilitate their learning.
You should aim to buy an acoustic or digital piano with hammer action keys to have piano lessons in your home.
